Washington Park's Grandfather Clock

On times when the carillon is not being played manually, the Westminster Chime will sound. The Westminster Chime is a quarter-hour time indication consisting of a melody which grows as the hour progresses. At the top of the hour it is followed by the hour strike, indicating the time of day. This time indication is a 5-century old bell tradition that was later copied by manufacturers of Grandfather Clocks and Door Bell makers. The use of such melodies, alerting people that the hour strike was imminent, ultimately resulted in the creation of the instrument "The Carillon".
